From Accra to Your Table
Nona's Kitchen began in 2008 when Mrs. Winona Baawa Malek, born and raised in Woodbridge, Virginia, USA, decided to share her grandmother's recipes with the community. She grew up learning that every meal should be prepared with love, patience, and the finest ingredients — lessons passed down through generations.
For Mrs. Winona Baawa Malek, food was never just about eating. Growing up, Sundays meant family gatherings filled with the rhythm of pounding fufu, grinding fresh pepper, and letting soups simmer slowly until they reached perfection. These meals were celebrations of culture, family, and tradition.
When she opened Nona's Kitchen, she brought more than recipes — she brought the spirit of Ghanaian hospitality. Her vision was simple: create a place where the Ghanaian diaspora could taste home, and where everyone else could discover the bold, comforting flavors of West Africa.
Fifteen years later, Nona's Kitchen has become a beloved gathering spot. We still cook the traditional way — jollof rice in large pots over fire, banku hand-pounded, and soups simmered for hours to build deep, rich flavor.
Today, Mrs. Winona Baawa Malek's daughter Raelyn has joined the kitchen, adding fresh energy while honoring the traditions that made us who we are. Together, they ensure every plate carries the same love and authenticity that has defined Nona's Kitchen since the very beginning.
